I was responding to some adolescent comments on Facebook when this struck me. Adolescents are like fledgling birds but they overestimate their ability to fly by about six years.

So when a thirteen-year-old challenges a parent who is probably their senior by twenty years, it seems appropriate and wise to just tell their belligerent teen, “Then go ahead and jump.”

Let them have their freedom to do as they please, against some household rule. They then face the same…
