Millions of people today are feeling dread and fear over the candidates currently vying to become president. Their fear is justified.

But as an antidote to the fear and an aid to understanding, let me suggest getting a pet. Become a pet owner, according to your circumstances. (Apartment dwellers should know the regulations regarding pet animals set by landlords. But landowners can do whatever they want, get a zebra for a pet if that’s what they want.)

I am an apartment dweller. Our landlord allows dogs, cats and birds but only small birds like budgies. I have had two budgies for over seven years now. I belong to a budgie owners group on Facebook, too. It was a question posed by another member that got me thinking. The question was if it was “right” to get a budgie to come to them by feeding the bird millet (especially liked by budgies, millet is called the crack cocaine of the budgie world).

The simple answer is yes. But there is a deeper more profound reason why we should become the food source for our pet animals, it’s our role in nature. We have become the feeders of a wide range of animals both domestic and wild.
