We Don’t Need Any Mars Colony
We need something else a lot more.
About Mr. Musk’s idea of terraforming Mars. While we might agree that establishing permanent populations on “earth like” planets may prove necessary for our “long term” survival, it remains today a sheer impossibility. That’s right: it’s not possible to establish a permanent human population on Mars. Period.
I think it’s great that we have such capable and adventurous people as Elon Musk. But I believe we need them here on our home planet and not busying themselves with impossible projects like colonizing Mars. We need them here a lot more, working on problems that might cause our extinction before we even re-explore our nearest neighbor, the Moon.
Look at one of the realities right now: Only Russia has a long-term space station orbiting Earth. But who runs Russia right now? Sixty-nine year old Vladimir Putin runs Russia 110%. Unlike the nitwit “psychological profiles” used against American politician Donald Trump, I haven’t seen any declarations of mental illness regarding Vladimir Putin which literally means he’s just self deluding like the rest of us. How long will the astronauts from other countries be welcome on Russia’s “international” space station and how long will people be willing to support that entirely parasitic space station?
Someone dare to tell me that Vladimir Putin isn’t a more immediate threat than a wandering astroid or rogue planet. Go ahead and give that a try. So why don’t we have any billionaires in the West funding and working on a solution to the Vladimir Putin threat?
Let’s stop and take another look at the size and scope of the Mars Rehab Project. First and foremost Mars lacks the mass which would provide enough of a gravity well to nearly duplicate that of Earth’s gravity. Where ya gonna get that additional mass? Are you going to invent a gravity machine to use to make Mars’ gravity well the size of the Earth’s? We are not even close to creating such a device or method. We don’t even have any prototype design. We have no clue how to do that. And without the gravity well it’s also impossible to maintain an atmosphere anywhere near that of Earth’s.
So just for starters, the project would have to add 5330 sextillion kilograms of mass to Mars. If we had a mass large enough — how would we transport it to mars? — That’s another EIGHT Mars-sized planets! Any Mars colony would be just as parasitic on Earth’s resources.
And who says it’s even possible for people to travel two years each way with no gravity? Science has already proved that being without gravity weakens the entire human organism. Months of recovery are needed for each and every astronaut after prolonged stays on that Russian space station. Basically, Mr. Musk’s fascinating pipe dream will more probably result in a mass funeral ceremony for us to endure here on Earth. You want to kill six or so human beings? Then keep taking up Elon Musk’s “noble cause.”
Stop joking around, take a break from entertaining yourself. You will not live to see the day when even getting to our own Moon will be anything like “routine.” I fully agree that we need entertainment (and certainly crave it). But when you substitute entertainment for practical, attainable goals like eliminating self deluded war criminals like Vladimir Putin, you are committing the worst kind of moral and ethical crime. This is the real Crime Against Humanity — to whistle past the grave yard you yourself is headed for.
Let’s just start telling good folks like Elon Musk he’s not going to get our support. We don’t need him as another kind of entertainer. He’s capable of doing so much more for himself and for us all.
If we are going to coalesce on any project, let it be a coalition to save the heroic warriors of the Ukraine. We need heroes, we don’t need any more entertainers.
But in closing. Let me say that Mr. Musk’s effort to make the Twitter platform more egalitarian is praiseworthy.
